How a chip run works

From the chipper to someone's paths.

  1. 1

    Job's done

The chipper's full and the yard is 20 miles the wrong way.

  2. 2

    Search on the way

Every site in range that takes what you're carrying, fits your vehicle and still wants more.

  3. 3

    Call ahead if asked

Some hosts want a call or text first. The number's on the site, with a message ready.

  4. Tip where it's wanted

That's it. When the host doesn't want any more, they remove the listing.

Who hosts

Anywhere that wants the wood.

  • Allotments

Paths between beds, compost bays and new plots cleared from grass.

  • Gardens

Mulch for borders, forest gardens and soft play under trees.

  • Farms and smallholdings

Bedding, muddy gateways and the muck heap.

  • Log burners

Homes and firewood sellers, often paying for good hardwood to split and season.

Logs too

Burn logs? Get them local.

Tree work turns up plenty of logs and rings that need a home. List your home, log store or firewood business, say what you'll pay, and tree surgeons will drop them off when they're working nearby.

  • Say what you'll pay, such as cash per load, or take them free
  • Only signed-in tree surgeons see exactly where you are
  • Remove the listing when the store's full

FAQ

Questions, answered.

A UK map of places that want woodchip and logs. Gardens, allotments, farms and log burners list a spot; tree surgeons search near the job and tip there instead of driving to a green waste site.

Nothing, on either side. Hosts can't charge a tipping fee, though log buyers can offer to pay for loads. Only public tips, such as council sites, have gate fees.

Two: mulch / woodchip, and logs. A host takes one or both.

A typical 3.5t tipper carries about a tonne of chip. A larger chip truck can bring several tonnes, so hosts say the largest vehicle that can reach them.

From one week to three months, or permanent, chosen by the host. For a time-limited listing we email a one-tap link to renew or remove it a few days before it ends, and arborists can flag a site as full.

Tip it local, not at the yard.
