Chiprun
Free for log burners and firewood sellers

Free logs, dropped off.

Free logs near you, from local tree surgeons

Tree surgeons cut logs on most jobs and need somewhere near to drop them. List your home or log store, say how much room you have, and they'll drop rounds when they're working nearby.

How it works

Three steps to a winter's firewood.

  1. 1

    Drop a pin

Mark where the logs should go, and the largest vehicle that can reach it.

  2. 2

    Choose logs

Logs, or logs and woodchip, and how long the listing stays up, from a week to three months.

  3. 3

    Get them dropped

Tree surgeons find you when they search nearby. When your store's full, remove the listing in one tap.

What you'll get

Free firewood, once it's seasoned.

  • Rounds, not splits

Trunk and branch wood cut to length on the job. Splitting is up to you.

  • Green, not dry

Freshly felled wood is around half water. Stack it and season it before it goes in the stove.

  • Whatever the job was

Usually mixed species: oak and ash one week, sycamore or conifer the next.

Split them, stack them off the ground with the top covered, and burn them once a moisture meter reads under 20%.

1–2 years

How long most free logs take to season. Take this winter's delivery, burn it the winter after next.

Want the good hardwood?

Choose “They pay you” when you list and say what you'd pay for a load. Tree surgeons with oak, ash or beech to shift look for buyers first. Free listings get whatever the job produced.

List your log store

Want woodchip too? See free woodchip, or read how to build a hugel bed with logs.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

Yes. Tree surgeons cut logs on most jobs and often have nowhere to take them but a yard miles away or a green waste site that charges. A log burner nearby that will take the load saves them time and money, so they'll drop it free.

No. Logs from tree work are freshly cut, so they're green and around 50% water. Split them, stack them off the ground with the top covered and the sides open, and burn them once a moisture meter reads under 20%.

Usually one to two years. Split softwoods like conifer and birch can be ready after a summer; dense hardwoods like oak take two years or more. Splitting them small and stacking in sun and wind speeds it up.

No. Listings are for logs, and you get whatever the job produced. If you're after good hardwood, choose “They pay you” on your listing and say what you'd pay. Tree surgeons with a load of oak or ash will look for you first.

Anything from a few rounds in a pickup to a full tipper load of a tonne or more. Say on your listing how much room you have. When you don't want any more, remove the listing in one tap, or let it expire on its own.

Only people signed in to Chiprun. Everyone else sees your town and a pin rounded to about a kilometre.

No. Chiprun works the other way round from Gumtree or Facebook groups: you list where you want logs, and tree surgeons bring them to you when they're working nearby. There's nothing to chase and no collecting.
