Who we are
Chiprun (chiprun.co.uk) is a free matching service that puts tree surgeons in touch with gardens, allotments and farms that want woodchip or logs. It's run by webdawson, which is the data controller for the personal information described here.
For anything about your data, email hello@chiprun.co.uk.
What we collect
When you register or sign in: your email address, and the name and role (host, arborist or both) you give us. You can also add a phone number. We send you a one-time sign-in link and, once you use it, keep a session so you stay signed in.
When you list a site: the details you enter, such as the site's name and description, its pin on the map, town and address, what you'll accept, access notes, opening times, a contact name and phone number, how you'd like to be contacted, a website and a photo.
When you report a problem with a site: the kind of problem, any note you add, and that it came from your account.
When you browse: our host keeps short-lived technical logs (such as IP address, browser and the page requested) to run the site securely. If you accept analytics cookies, Google Analytics also records how you use the site; see our cookie policy.
We don't take payments, and we don't ask for anything beyond what's listed here.
Who can see what
- Anyone can see a listing's name, description, what it accepts, opening times, town and postcode district, with the pin shown only roughly.
- Signed-in users can also see the exact pin, address, photo, contact name, phone number, contact preferences, website and access notes, so they can arrange a drop.
- Nobody else sees your email address. We use it only to sign you in and to contact you about your account and listings.
Only put contact details on a listing that you're happy for registered tree surgeons and hosts to use. We don't sell your information or share it for marketing.
Why we use it, and our lawful basis
- To provide the service you sign up for (contract): your account, sign-in, your listings and showing them to other users.
- To run it safely and well (legitimate interests): keeping the site secure, preventing misuse, dealing with reports about listings, and emailing you before a listing expires so the map stays accurate.
- To understand how the site is used (consent): Google Analytics, only if you accept it. You can withdraw consent at any time from the cookie settings.
- To meet legal obligations, if the law requires us to keep or share information.
Companies that help us run Chiprun
These companies process information for us, under contract, and only to provide their service:
| Company | What for | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Vercel | Hosts the website. Requests are handled in London. | UK, with Vercel based in the US |
| Supabase | Stores the database: accounts, listings and photos. | Ireland (EU) |
| Resend | Sends sign-in links and listing reminder emails. | US |
| Google Analytics | Counts visits and page views, only if you accept analytics cookies. | US and elsewhere |
Where information goes outside the UK, it's protected by UK adequacy regulations or the standard contractual clauses those companies provide.
Your browser also contacts OpenStreetMap to load map tiles, and postcodes.io when you search by postcode or use your location (only the postcode or rough coordinates are sent). They receive your IP address as part of that request, as any website would.
How long we keep it
- Your account stays until you ask us to delete it.
- Listings come down when you remove them or when they expire. Deleting your account deletes your listings and their photos.
- Sign-in links expire after 30 minutes, and sessions after 60 days or when you sign out.
- Analytics data is kept by Google for no more than 14 months.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law you can ask us to:
- give you a copy of the personal information we hold about you
- correct anything that's wrong
- delete your information, including your account
- restrict or object to how we use it
- give you your information in a portable format
Email hello@chiprun.co.uk from the address on your account and we'll reply within one month. You can edit or remove your listings yourself at any time from your account.
If you're unhappy with how we've handled your information, please tell us first. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
Children
Chiprun is for adults arranging tree waste drops. It isn't meant for anyone under 18.
Changes
If we change this policy we'll update the date at the top, and for significant changes we'll let registered users know by email.
